Dal Khichdi

Simple wholesome recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Basmati rice
  • 1/2 cup dal (Moong Dal is usually preferred but I used red lentils or masoor dal)
  • 1 cup Mixed vegetables (I used frozen mixed veg- peas, french beans, carrots etc)
  • 1 ghee (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp Asafoetida powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 Red Chilly

Method:

Wash the rice and lentils a couple of times till the water runs clear.

Place the washed rice, lentils and vegetables in a pressure cooker.

Add turmeric powder, asafoetida and salt and couple of cups of water.

Close the pressure cooker and cook for about 7-8 whistles (you know your pressure cooker best, yours might need less whistles to cook the lentils).

In a separate pan heat a little oil for the tempering.

Add the mustard seeds and let it splutter, add the cumin seeds and chilly and cook for one minute.

Add the cooked rice-lentils mixture to the pan and mix well.

Add a little more water if the kichdi is too dry.

Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with yoghurt and pickle.
